Question by laura: Photoshop – can’t use any tools on my new layer apart from the paint brush, using a RAW converted image?
This is my first time using a RAW file. I can make changes on the background layer, but not the new layer. Any ideas?
Answer by Nahum
Most of Photoshop’s tools only work at certain ‘bit depths’. 8 bits per channel is the most common, and is used by JPEG and PNG graphics. However, raw format images use whatever bit depth is available on the camera. (My Nikon D40X for example makes 14bpc images.)
You might want to make a copy of your image—after applying all the high-definition edits you wish to make—and then convert it to 8 bit color mode (Image > Mode > 8 bits per channel) to gain access to your other tools and layers. Keep in mind that the raw format image has more flexibility for editing, and all this flexibility is lost when converting down to 8 bpc.
Question by Veemon: How do I stop Photoshop CS4 from creating a new layer each time I use the line tool?
Each time I use the line tool, a new layer is created. How can I stop this? No settings were changed.
Thanks in advance.
Answer by dylanralph
the only way i can think to resolve this is if you press [ctrl] + E, which is the shortcut to stick the layer to the layer below it, so once your happy with the line you just merge it to the layer below and continue.
i hope this works out for you, good luck 🙂
Question by j1 projectz: How do I select an image or layer on Photoshop CS4?
In the old PS 7, I could select an image or layer by holding down Control and clicking on the layer. That would make those “moving ants” border along whatever is in the layer. I want to just work with that single layer.
I can’t seem to do that in CS4??
Answer by Kyp
Shift + Ctrl + Alt + Mouse-click on the layer’s thumb.
Question by Megan O: How do I layer photos with Adobe Photoshop CS4?
Hi! I have never tried to use photoshop before. I downloaded a free trial because I’m trying to combine several photos for a craft project. I was surprised by how complicated the software is (for someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing!). Can someone please explain to me as simply as possible how I take photos from my computer and combine them into one? Thanks!

Question by Kenny55: Photoshop CS4, how to load several pictures into layer?
How to upload pictures, say 5 different pictures into the layer (Photoshop CS4). I need all pictures shown up in the layer dialogue. When I drag first picture into the layer, it shows. Then I drag the 2nd picture into the CS4 layer, the first one disappear, and replace with the 2nd one. But I want to keep all pictures.
Answer by Sattamander
you need to create another layer first BEFORE pulling the picture in.
Question by otori_katsumoto: How do I use a brush to start painting a layer in Photoshop?
Say I have a white background and I have a layer that I want to sort of “paint-on”, as in I want it to be start showing up as i paint with a brush…how would I do that?
Sorry, I should have been more clear, I mean say I have an image that I want to apply by means of painting it on via the brush tool
Answer by James
All you need to do is click the brush icon on the left, it looks like the tip of a paintbrush. Then make sure you have a color selected that isn’t white and just start painting. It shouldn’t be much harder then that. If that doesn’t work make sure your layer isn’t locked.

Question by Tomdropthebomb: How do you rotate a layer in Photoshop CS4 animation without it rotating in the other frames?
I’m creating an animation in Photoshop CS4. Whenever I rotate a layer on a new frame it also rotates on the previous frames. I’ve looked about the settings etc and haven’t found a solution. I’m relatively experienced with Photoshop and it’s kinda annoying me! Any help would be amazing!

i applied a layer mask on a picture and it works with the black and white brush, but every time i let go of the mouse and go over the same area with the same color the picture comes back just as if i swapped colors.
