I am thinking about buying a macbook pro on ebay with Final Cut Studio and Adobe CS4 (master collection) already installed, however, because they said that they will not include the original install discs, I am worried that if I buy it now and then buy a new mac later, I will not be able to use CS4 or Final Cut on the new mac.

Open up your “My Computer” folder
Then go to: –>Program Files
then click on the “Adobe” folder
Click on the “Adobe Photoshop CS2” folder
Then Click on “Presets”
Then Click on “Brushes”
Put all you brush files in there….

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Presets\Brushes

They only mean external storage devices.

The reason is because typically, when installed, some applications need to be able to write to the Windows registry or store its configuration files (such as an INI file) in the user’s profile. This cannot be done in external storage devices such as USB flash drive. Photoshop is one of those applications that write to the registry and store a lot of configuration files on your profile.

This is also what separate the portable applications from them. Portable apps are software programs that are able to run independently without the need to install files to the system it is running in.

If you download an action file (.atn) you can save it wherever you want (i suggest some folder where you collect your actions).

The easiest way to add them to the actions panel (Window->Actions) in Photoshop simply double-click the file and it will add itself (you will get no confirmation or dialog box, but it will show up in the list).

This has more to do with your operating system than with Photoshop. PS does take ‘ownership’ of the BMP format, but you can return it to the OS.

If you’re on Windows 7, you have to make a registry change. This site has a file that can automate the change for you:

In Windows XP, you can add items to the C:\WINDOWS\System32\SHELLNEW folder. Copies of these will appear in the “New…” dialog.

As long as they’re abr files and they’re in the right folder it doesn’t matter what the operating system is.

New brushes will usually appear at the end of the Brush Selector dropdown. Click on the Brush Tool, then in the Options Bar click on the Brush Selector and scroll all the way down to the bottom of the list.

If they’re not there, click on the load brushes icon (looks like a big arrowhead) and see if they’re listed there.

An easier way to keep your brushes handy and safe (especially if you ever have to uninstall and reinstall the program) is to keep your new brushes in a separate folder on the Desktop or somewhere easy to find. Then open Photoshop, go to File Locations (which is usually at the end of the Edit menu) and just tell the program where to find your brush folder.

Copy the fonts to:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Fonts

That way only Photoshop (and other Adobe apps) see them. If no Fonts folder exists, create one. You do not have to restart Photoshop.

If you are using the 64bit Windows version, put them in the same folder, not the “Program Files (x86)” one.
