This is my first time using a RAW file. I can make changes on the background layer, but not the new layer. Any ideas?

Most of Photoshop’s tools only work at certain ‘bit depths’. 8 bits per channel is the most common, and is used by JPEG and PNG graphics. However, raw format images use whatever bit depth is available on the camera. (My Nikon D40X for example makes 14bpc images.)

You might want to make a copy of your image—after applying all the high-definition edits you wish to make—and then convert it to 8 bit color mode (Image > Mode > 8 bits per channel) to gain access to your other tools and layers. Keep in mind that the raw format image has more flexibility for editing, and all this flexibility is lost when converting down to 8 bpc.

In the old PS 7, I could select an image or layer by holding down Control and clicking on the layer. That would make those “moving ants” border along whatever is in the layer. I want to just work with that single layer.

i’m editing a picture and i want to make a portion of it negative, but for some reason i can’t find a negative filter… i’m pretty sure i’ve done this before, i just can’t seem to find how i did it last time.

Make your selection, then go to Image – Adjustments – Invert.
Then turn that into b&w if you prefer.

The original image file has to be the same size as the display size on the site. Resizing degrades quality.

i don’t know whether i have to use a mirror tool or whether i have to have 2 copies of the image side by side and flip one.

either way, i don’t know how to do it, I’m completely clueless when it comes to Photoshop sadly.

You place an adjustment layer, then using the liquefy options, you indent it slightly above the background which has the effects.

i downloaded some photoshop brushes from a site,and so i extracted them and put them in my brushes folder.well turns out their .abr files that are opened as a ‘notepad’ file.how do i make them an image file so i can use them on photofiltre?

It is your system identifying and opening the abr files as notepad files rather than the files being text files. Here’s link to an open source utility that can convert the proprietary Photoshop abr files into png format which you are perhaps more familiar with.
