I apply a colored gradient, but it only shows up in hues of grays. What is wrong?

This might sound silly but is your image a black and white/grayscale image? See if the “mode” is set to RGB. If not see if changing it helps. (Image —> Mode –> RGB)

The only two other things I can think of (if the above isn’t the problem) is that 1. the layer you’re applying the gradient to is set to a blend mode causing it to look gray on your image (set it to normal if it’s not and see if it’s still happening), or 2. you have an adjustment layer affecting your gradient layer perhaps — apply a new gradient to the top-most layer with absolutely nothing above it and see if it’s still happening.

My intro i created in AE CS4 has some problems. When I render it, all it renders is my text, but not my effects or background. It plays sound, but that doesnt help much. What should i do? Ive tried the 2 different ways of rendering, and they didnt work. Whats the problem?

By render I assume you mean like the final, export render?

That does sound a bit strange, but check the following:

1.) Isolation for all layers should be OFF. If isolation would be on, it would be indicated by the circle dot to the left of the layer, next to the eye icon.
2.) FX selection should be ON. To turn the effect for that layer on, select the FX in the check mark boxes towards the middle of the layer properties.
3.) Just make sure the effects for effects within a layer are turned on, as indicated by the icon FX in the check mark box in the effect properties window.

Check those things for us to see if any of that might be the problem.
I have a feeling that it’s not…your problem sounds a lot more complicated since you state it so clearly, and seem to aware of how things work in AE.

There are many many different tips/tricks/techniques which could be used here. I’d seriously advise reading up on Photoshop; tutorials, user forums and Photoshop magazine websites will all have advice on specific techniques.

There’s also the issue of external plugins. So much research and work has been invested in some of the plugins now available that you ignore this aspect at your peril. The main advantage in using externals is that of time: the less time retouchers have to spend in working on any particular photograph, the better. They allow the staff to produce more in less time, which, ultimately, reflects on the financial bottom line (i.e. the price you and I pay for their work through magazines etc).

Gimp can do almost every thing that photoshop CS4 can do. Read my Answer for this other Question i Answered and it will tell you how you can use some photoshop filters and photoshop brushes in gimp.

You can also use photoshop filter`s in other photo editing software that are freeware down load`s. Here are some of them.

The length of a RAM preview is determined by the number of frames that can be stored in the RAM cache. The RAM cache exists in the address space of the foreground After Effects process. By allocating more memory to the foreground After Effects process, less memory is allocated to the background processes. This allocation of memory to the foreground process can cause fewer background processes to be used to render multiple frames simultaneously, so there is a tradeoff between faster rendering and longer RAM previews. Drag the slider to adjust the memory allocation to a balance that suits your work and computer system.
CPUs To Leave For Other Applications Set this value to a number other than 0 to prevent After Effects from using all of the CPUs (processor cores) in your computer system. For example, if you have a computer with 8 CPUs, setting this value to 2 leaves 6 CPUs for After Effects.
