Q&A: Why can’t I open my downloaded brushes on adobe photoshop?

Question by kirut: Why can’t I open my downloaded brushes on adobe photoshop?
I’m having real problems with my photoshop brushes that I’m downloading off the internet. Normally I download the file, open it in Winzip, unzip it, then extract the file into my brushes folder and when I open it in Photoshop it comes up.
I haven’t done it for a while, and when I went to do it a minute ago it won’t work. The brushes I have extracted don’t appear in the loading menu, when I open to folder?

The files are saved as PNG images, which isn’t correct is it?
Why is this and how can I change this? It’s on every site I donwload them from?

Is it an ABR file? Photoshop uses that format for brushes.

The fact that you’re asking that question makes me think that you’re not (very) familiar with Photoshop.

If that is the case, you have a LOT of learning to do before you would even want to think about getting more stuff.

Learn it, use it, and practice – in time, you’ll KNOW what other goodies you’ll need or want.

Q&A: how do i use my downloaded brushes in photoshop 6.0?

Question by rio: how do i use my downloaded brushes in photoshop 6.0?
Everytime I try to use one of my downloaded brushes a window pops up stating that the brushes could not be loaded because the file is not compatible with my version of photoshop. But all the files are abr. how can i fix that?

Answer by EmJay
Brushes made in Photoshop can only be used in versions equal to or higher than the one they were created in. It means that more recent version brushes are not backwards compatible. This is because the brush engine changed, became more complex, starting with version 7 and later versions but earlier version 6 brushes are usable in later versions. You may try looking for some programs which can access these files and probably convert them for an older version or you may learn to make your own brushes (tones of google and youtube tuts).

How do you use downloaded Photoshop brushes?

Question by : How do you use downloaded Photoshop brushes?
I keep downloading Photoshop brushes from this site: http://www.brusheezy.com/. I receive the brushes but when I click the ABR file, it directs me straight to Photoshop. I try looking for the downloaded brushes in the brush list but it`s not there! And I even registered to Adobe. I thought it would help but nothing is happening. Help! 🙁
Crsimon36: I tried what you did but it would not work. Do I have to extract the files first?
Crsimon36: Oh yeah, and I tried extracting the file and it still would not work. 🙁 Am I doing something wrong?

How to Install Custom Brushes
All Versions: Place the *.abr files into:
Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements X\Presets\Brushes where X is the version number for your version of Photoshop Elements.
Brushes created in Photoshop 7 or later will not work in Photoshop Elements 2 and earlier. Any Photoshop brushes should work in Photoshop Elements 3 and later.

Answer by shelbi
remember where you save them to,
then go to file-import-custom brush.
now click “open” and find the brushes
you downloaded and click “open” again.
now you will add the files to your brushes
by clicking the add all button.

oh and if you downloaded multiple brushes
in a zip file you will need to unzip the file.
