Question by kirut: Why can’t I open my downloaded brushes on adobe photoshop?
I’m having real problems with my photoshop brushes that I’m downloading off the internet. Normally I download the file, open it in Winzip, unzip it, then extract the file into my brushes folder and when I open it in Photoshop it comes up.
I haven’t done it for a while, and when I went to do it a minute ago it won’t work. The brushes I have extracted don’t appear in the loading menu, when I open to folder?

The files are saved as PNG images, which isn’t correct is it?
Why is this and how can I change this? It’s on every site I donwload them from?

Is it an ABR file? Photoshop uses that format for brushes.

Most of Photoshop’s tools only work at certain ‘bit depths’. 8 bits per channel is the most common, and is used by JPEG and PNG graphics. However, raw format images use whatever bit depth is available on the camera. (My Nikon D40X for example makes 14bpc images.)

You might want to make a copy of your image—after applying all the high-definition edits you wish to make—and then convert it to 8 bit color mode (Image > Mode > 8 bits per channel) to gain access to your other tools and layers. Keep in mind that the raw format image has more flexibility for editing, and all this flexibility is lost when converting down to 8 bpc.

Using photoshop elements 4.0, I can’t change brush spacing- the setting is simply greyed out. I need it to be very low so that i can draw complete lines with my tablet! Any ideas?
I reset the tools, and now it works. weird

I’ve never experienced this problem. All I can think of is to try a couple of other brush tips and see if the spacing is still greyed out. I launched PSE 4 and, using one of the Default Brushes, changed a bunch of things on the Options Bar to see if any of them greyed out the Spacing slider but none did. Then I selected some specialty brushes and regular brushes and none of them greyed out the Spacing slider. The Spacing slider was always available. About all I can recommend is to click on the brush icon on the far left side of the Options Bar and click on Reset This Tool.

you have to install them into photoshop brushes, the small square thingy (made out of three small lines) on the top right of the brushes window, click on it and click on load brushes

Did you press the wrong button on your mouse? If yes, then press the right button on your mouse to show up that foreground color in your picture.

What is in Photoshop that isn’t in GIMP?

Gimp can do almost every thing that photoshop CS4 can do. Read my Answer for this other Question i Answered and it will tell you how you can use some photoshop filters and photoshop brushes in gimp.

You can also use photoshop filter`s in other photo editing software that are freeware down load`s. Here are some of them.

They only mean external storage devices.

The reason is because typically, when installed, some applications need to be able to write to the Windows registry or store its configuration files (such as an INI file) in the user’s profile. This cannot be done in external storage devices such as USB flash drive. Photoshop is one of those applications that write to the registry and store a lot of configuration files on your profile.

This is also what separate the portable applications from them. Portable apps are software programs that are able to run independently without the need to install files to the system it is running in.

As long as they’re abr files and they’re in the right folder it doesn’t matter what the operating system is.

New brushes will usually appear at the end of the Brush Selector dropdown. Click on the Brush Tool, then in the Options Bar click on the Brush Selector and scroll all the way down to the bottom of the list.

If they’re not there, click on the load brushes icon (looks like a big arrowhead) and see if they’re listed there.

An easier way to keep your brushes handy and safe (especially if you ever have to uninstall and reinstall the program) is to keep your new brushes in a separate folder on the Desktop or somewhere easy to find. Then open Photoshop, go to File Locations (which is usually at the end of the Edit menu) and just tell the program where to find your brush folder.
