First extract the abr file to the location below that matches your PS version and OS.
♦ CS4 Windows – C:\Documents and Settings \%yourusername%\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Presets\Brushes
♦ CS3 Windows – C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Presets\Brushes.
♦ Mac – Applications >Adobe Photoshop %version% > Presets > Brushes.
Once the file resides in the proper location you must then load it You load the Brush set as follows:
• Select the Brush Tool
• Click the Brush field pull-down from the Options bar at the top of the canvas
• Click the little right facing triangle button from the top of the dialog
• If you loaded the abr file to the proper folder, the brush set should be listed
• Click on the desired brush set and Click the Append Button at the prompt

Search for .abr files on your computer. While that is a common location for brushes, brushes don’t need to be in that location to be loaded. You just have to find where you saved them.

It depends on which version of PhotoShop you have. If you click the Help link at the top of your PhotoShop screen, you’ll find the information for your version there, or you can get it at the Adobe site, which is a great resource.

(I’m using CS2, and for me, it’s Edit > Define Brush Preset.)

Underneath the various tools in the tool palette are two overlapping squares, one for foreground colour, one for background and also a much smaller set of black and white squares which reset foreground to black and background to white.
Your foreground colour may be set to white currently so that whatever brush you use will use the white colour. Double click on the foreground colour icon and it will open up a colour picker. Select your colour there and your brushes should reflect this colour change.
