There are some wonderful Photoshop brushes out there and, unfortunately, they can’t be used directly in Paintshop … but they can be converted and then used. Also, some brush designers offer “image files” along with their abr (photoshop brush) files. You can open the images in Paintshop and, if they’re not already PNG or GIF files with transparent backgrounds, use the Magic Wand Tool to select and delete their white backgrounds. Then use File>Export>Custom Brush. Give your new brush a name and click OK.

Here are the instructions to convert brushes along with the link for the abrViewer. It’s not difficult.

In General Photoshop is a very memory consuming program requiring a lot of memory to run compared to most other programs. Since it was running fine at first I presume you need to clean your PC. maybe try running a defrag and removing unnecessary files.

What type of brush should be used when doing lineart in Photoshop?

Question by Danielle: What type of brush should be used when doing lineart in Photoshop?
My lineart always comes out like this , http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2qiustt&s=5 (pay no attention to the colors) And its really annoying! It looks so stupid while the one I did in pencil which was scanned and messy turns out looking way better.

I think I’m doing something wrong because all of the other linearts I’ve seen look different.

Hi, I’m a concept artist. My job is to draw and paint different things in PS. I use PS CS3. To draw I use the hard edge brush. Basically what you want to do is, go to the brushes menu, click on Hard Round Brush. There should be a brush representation stroke picture in the brushes menu to show you the kind of stroke your going to get. The stroke should have a crisp hard edge. It should also have shape dynamics on so it has pressure sensitivity. So it should go from a point, to thick, back to a point. Draw on a seperate layer from the background so you can always go back to a fresh white document. Also, turning the opacity down to about 50 or 60 percent while using jet black as your color gives you the ability to understand your lines better.

Help that helps.

What type of brushes are normally used when drawing anime/people using photoshop?

Question by Anitta: What type of brushes are normally used when drawing anime/people using photoshop?
I was despairingly trying to figure out what type of brushes are used with all these fascinating drawings I find on DeviantART and such… I’ve tried downloading tons of brushes, but non seems to be what I’m searching for. I want those soft lines that doesn’t look pixalized or kind of wavy when used. I have adobe photoshop CS5, but it doesn’t matter if you have an older version, I just need the the type of brush. Any link is welcomed and appreciated.

You can use the “basic” brush shape, you don’t need fancy brushes.
The trick is in how hard or soft edged your brush is, and most importantly, setting the spacing down to 1% from the default 25%, which is what makes it look “wavy” when you paint. In your brushes palette, click on Brush Tip Shape at the top, and then adjust the bottom slider that says Spacing all the way to the left. You will now get a MUCH smoother stroke.

ALSO, work at a higher magnification, to make a cleaner mark, and set your image size when you start to 200ppi, rather than the standard 72. This will give you more pixels to work with. You can always resize it when you are done through Image>Image Size and then change the Resolution back to 72 pixels/inch, which is screen resolution for Macs (96 pixels/inch is PC).

Best of success to you!
