Question by laura: Photoshop – can’t use any tools on my new layer apart from the paint brush, using a RAW converted image?
This is my first time using a RAW file. I can make changes on the background layer, but not the new layer. Any ideas?

Most of Photoshop’s tools only work at certain ‘bit depths’. 8 bits per channel is the most common, and is used by JPEG and PNG graphics. However, raw format images use whatever bit depth is available on the camera. (My Nikon D40X for example makes 14bpc images.)

You might want to make a copy of your image—after applying all the high-definition edits you wish to make—and then convert it to 8 bit color mode (Image > Mode > 8 bits per channel) to gain access to your other tools and layers. Keep in mind that the raw format image has more flexibility for editing, and all this flexibility is lost when converting down to 8 bpc.

What will I be missing out on if i settle for the free GIMP software instead of Photoshop CS4.
What is in Photoshop that isn’t in GIMP?
Please note I hate the layout of the cheaper Photoshop Element 7, so that isn’t a option.

Gimp can do almost every thing that photoshop CS4 can do. Read my Answer for this other Question i Answered and it will tell you how you can use some photoshop filters and photoshop brushes in gimp.

You can also use photoshop filter`s in other photo editing software that are freeware down load`s. Here are some of them.

P.S.You will also need commander light to change some phothshope filter`s to 8bf file`s so they will work in gimp and vicman`s and irfanview.here is where you can get commander light.

I was useing the brush tool and I must have accidently clicked on something, I don’t know what, but it stopped working. I tried to go back in history, but it still doesn’t work…even after turning off my computer for a while it still didn’t work. It shows the circle but when I click to paint nothing happens.
I switched to useing the pencil tool instead for a while and then the same thing happened to it.
Please help

Maybe you accidentally changed the opacity? Check the toolbar up at the top and see what it says next to “Opacity.” Make sure it is at 100%

use the liquefy tool to make people thin or fat also to warp pictures usually found in the filter menu or just click through the menus till you see it. if you are trying to clean up pimples and stuff like that then you need to use the clone stamp tool and the heal brush. Look on Youtube there are many useful vids that will walk you through the steps

I am unable to use any of the tools on Adobe Photoshop CS4, my mouse always appears with a hand shape but its doesn’t let me select any of the other tools. Could someone tell me why is this happening, I don’t think there is a problem with the installation of the software as i have installed it three times but it is continuously coming up with the same problem.

My first thought would be a corrupt preferences file — although if you’ve reinstalled several times, it may be a ram issue on that computer.

Here’s a link with some quick fixes for the problem … skip to #7 and start there. See if that doesn’t cure what ails you..

Photoshop CS3 tools automatically expand when I click them… why the change?

When I was using PS last week, to expand each of the icons for the tools on the left hand side (for example: brush -> pencil/brush/colour replacement tool; or: fill -> gradient/paint bucket) it used to require holding down the lmb on the icon, now it does it when you just click quickly on it. Where can this behaviour be turned off?
It does seem new, and it was something that I would’ve liked when I first started using it a few years ago, but I’ve gotten used to it now and I really don’t like it, but can’t find a way to turn it off!

i tried to use the brush or the spot healing brush and it didnt work. it just wont do anything. i click and lcick and click and it doesnt work but the filters works. wwhen i use the spot healing brush on a picture i clicked on the spot i want to fix but it just didnt do anything. theres no affect of anything same with the paint brush. what is wrong? help me fix it please.
