Photoshop – can’t use any tools on my new layer apart from the paint brush, using a RAW converted image?

Question by laura: Photoshop – can’t use any tools on my new layer apart from the paint brush, using a RAW converted image?
This is my first time using a RAW file. I can make changes on the background layer, but not the new layer. Any ideas?

Answer by Nahum
Most of Photoshop’s tools only work at certain ‘bit depths’. 8 bits per channel is the most common, and is used by JPEG and PNG graphics. However, raw format images use whatever bit depth is available on the camera. (My Nikon D40X for example makes 14bpc images.)

You might want to make a copy of your image—after applying all the high-definition edits you wish to make—and then convert it to 8 bit color mode (Image > Mode > 8 bits per channel) to gain access to your other tools and layers. Keep in mind that the raw format image has more flexibility for editing, and all this flexibility is lost when converting down to 8 bpc.

How do I use Photoshop paint brushes in Gimp?

Question by Cora Blackwood: How do I use Photoshop paint brushes in Gimp?
I downloaded some watercolor paint brushes and they aren’t showing up when I go to use them in Gimp. Somebody please help me I’m going insane!

Here is the link to the brushes: http://www.bittbox.com/freebies/free-hi-res-watercolor-photoshop-brushes-set-ii

I HAVE WINDOWS! I also know how to add them to my brushes folder it just doesn’t seem to be wanting to work.
The download saves them as paintbrusheswatercolor.vbr and then the file type is ZIP. Should that be changed?

Can photoshop brushes be used in paint shop pro?

There are some wonderful Photoshop brushes out there and, unfortunately, they can’t be used directly in Paintshop … but they can be converted and then used. Also, some brush designers offer “image files” along with their abr (photoshop brush) files. You can open the images in Paintshop and, if they’re not already PNG or GIF files with transparent backgrounds, use the Magic Wand Tool to select and delete their white backgrounds. Then use File>Export>Custom Brush. Give your new brush a name and click OK.

Here are the instructions to convert brushes along with the link for the abrViewer. It’s not difficult.

I have PSP X so I can at least get you started. I think I can take you all the way through if you will be patient and let me walk you through slowly 🙂
First you have to convert the brushes so they will be PSP compatible and to do that you need to download ABR Viewer. This is the link and it’s free –
http://abrviewer.sourceforge.net/
It’s easy to use and if you have a problem just let me know. Open the brushes with this program and it will automatically convert the brushes to .png files. It will also put these files in a separate folder in your document folder but you have to tell it to. Just check out all the options on the menus. As I remember the help files are good.
When you do this let me know. It’s better to email me (joanbrandt@bytheindigorabbit.com), but I will check back here also.

Im going to assume you mean just black and white, at which case make sure when you start a new painting to change the “color mode” to something other than bitmap

Is it possible to convert Photoshop brushes into Paint Shop Pro?

No can do. Adobe Photoshop is not my software of choice. I would work with Paint Shop Pro. Despite all the hype Adobe gets, I think PSP is a hundred times better. Adobe is simply a commercial success. It has no real value.

Photoshop: why is my paint brush acting like the burn tool?

Question by wequaltoyou: Photoshop: why is my paint brush acting like the burn tool?
I’m still getting used to photoshop. I’ve reset it, and have no idea how i got into this but my paint brush is normal, my color pick is normal but it’s light, like it’s only making a shadow on the white back ground, i need solid black. How do I get thing’s back to normal? please and thank you

Best answer:

Answer by Laura
Check the opacity and the flow. If those are both at 100%, check the opacity and mode of the layer you are working on. Make sure that the opacity for the layer is 100%, and the mode is Normal.

Help with Photoshop paint brush please?

Question by yati: Help with Photoshop paint brush please?
I made a word look 3D in Illustrator, and then brought it to Photoshop to do what I wanted to do.
I launched that 3D word in Photoshop and I am trying to paint on it. But, when I select any color to paint, * all it paints is shades of gray *. What shall I do?
Someone else answered it. It was in Gray Scale mode =) Thank you though Cash.

*If anyone else is having the same trouble —
go to Image >Mode > then select RGB.*

Answer by Cash
sometimes that happens. try restarting photoshop and make sure u dont have alot of windows open.
If that doesnt work , try to flatten the image at edit and then try to paint over it.
Or save it as a different image file and open that.

It is most likely set to gray scale, go to file and change grayscale to RGB color.
