I apply a colored gradient, but it only shows up in hues of grays. What is wrong?

This might sound silly but is your image a black and white/grayscale image? See if the “mode” is set to RGB. If not see if changing it helps. (Image —> Mode –> RGB)

The only two other things I can think of (if the above isn’t the problem) is that 1. the layer you’re applying the gradient to is set to a blend mode causing it to look gray on your image (set it to normal if it’s not and see if it’s still happening), or 2. you have an adjustment layer affecting your gradient layer perhaps — apply a new gradient to the top-most layer with absolutely nothing above it and see if it’s still happening.

I paid big money and bought the CS4 Adobe suite and now find that the program only supports a screen DPI of 96 . Any higher, and the icons on the screen are clipped. Surely Adobe should have found out this fault before releasing such a professional program to the markert?

“DPI” doesn’t actually exist on screen: there are pixels only. And Windows, for some reason, considers that one logical inch on the screen equals 96 pixels. (Apple for many years used 72.)

If you need higher-res graphics, Adobe will happily direct you to Photoshop.

i want to have adobe photoshop cs4. but i don’t want to waste my time transferring all those files i have in CS2. is there anyway to JUST convert/upgrade/update my CS2 to CS4? any sites that offer free trials?

it has to be that when i run my CS4, all my files at CS2 are automatically in it.

No problem. Going from CS2 to CS4 will not wipe out your files. Your files will not be effected as they are, most likely, in folders outside of CS2. Only if you have downloaded a bunch of plugins, brushes, styles, etc. and placed then in with those that came with CS2 are you likely to lose anything. It is better to place those things in their separate folder and with Preferences, point PS to that folder.

There is no “upgrade” to a higher version of PS. Each version is a standalone program. I have five versions of Elements and two versions of PS installed on the same compujter and have never lost anything.

I don’t want to put the fonts into the C:\Windows\Fonts directory. I want them to only be used by Photoshop not all of windows. Thanks in advance!

Copy the fonts to:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Fonts

That way only Photoshop (and other Adobe apps) see them. If no Fonts folder exists, create one. You do not have to restart Photoshop.

If you are using the 64bit Windows version, put them in the same folder, not the “Program Files (x86)” one.

Im going to assume you mean just black and white, at which case make sure when you start a new painting to change the “color mode” to something other than bitmap

You might be in a different colour mode. Go to Image > Mode and check that you are using RGB or similar which supports colour. If this is not the issue check you are not in quick mask mode which you enter by pressing q and exit by pressing q.

Iv been drawing a picture in photoshop for a while now and all of a sudden my brush turned a bright peach-pink colour.
the colour window says the brush is black and the erasor tool wont work on any of the lined i drew before the brush turned pink. only the pink ones.

Sounds like you might be in Quick Mask Mode. Press the letter q on the keyboard to toggle out of it.

Make sure you’re using the Brush Tool and not a selection brush.

I have been working with Photoshop CS4 for years and graduated with a degree in Graphic Design last year. I am considering purchasing a new software and have heard that Photoshop Elements 7.0 is the simplified version of Photoshop CS4 (and in no way improved).

Is Photoshop Elements an improvement extension of PS CS4 or is it basically the same thing only fewer controls?

Elements 7 is what’s called a “build” of Photoshop CS4. It’s developed using CS4 as its foundation. Elements is a “basic” edition without the more professional bells and whistles. Not as many adjustment layers, not as many controls, no vector graphics capability, no color separation for printing, etc. Elements is for the hobbyist. Photoshop, for the professional. Elements is not an improved update for CS4.
