In Photoshop Elements 8, I cannot get my smartbrush tool to work. The screen in the layers palette just shows black even when I run the cursor over the image several times to either darken or brighten the image. Any suggestions?

Click on the Smartbrush Tool. Click on the little arrow over on the far left side of the Options Bar and click on Reset This Tool. If you ever have problems with any tool in the toolbar, always reset it before doing anything else.

If resetting the tool doesn’t work, reset the program’s Preferences File (which sets the program back to factory defaults, to the same condition it was in when you first installed it). Close the program. Wait a minute then hold down the Shift+CTRL+ALT and open the program like you normally do. KEEP HOLDING THE KEYS DOWN until a pop up appears asking if you want to delete and rebuild the file. Release the keys and click Yes/OK. It will take Elements a while to open while it deletes and rebuilds the file.

If Resetting the Preferences file doesn’t work, you’re going to have to uninstall/reinstall;-(

Before resetting the Preferences file or uninstalling, be sure to save any add-ons (brushes, styles, etc.) you’ve added to the program into another folder outside the program so you can reinstall them afterwards.

Try this …

Goto the Photoshop folder (Program Files/Photoshop Elements)

Inside go: Presets/Brushes

Then, simply drag the files to there, restart Photoshop, and they should show up.

Im on a Mac and use Photoshop CS2 … so i HOPE the procedure is the same.

The rule about downloading add-ons like brushes is that you can use anything made with your version or earlier so for PSE 3 you can use brushes made with Photoshop 7 or earlier. That would be 2004 and earlier.

Adobe Exchange has a bunch of stuff and each add-on has a date so you can easily see if the brushes are for you. Warning: there’s a ton of good stuff to look through;-)

Use the Browse By Catagory on the right to go to brushes. The buttons will say “Buy” or “Download”. “Download” are the free ones. If you want more information, Click on the Name of the brush set. Oh, so you don’t have to spend a life-time looking for the older brushes, click on the “Most Popular” or “Highest Rated” tab at the top.

According to About.com — http://graphicssoft.about.com/cs/photoshop/f/elementscompare.htm — they don’t include the mixer brush and tips tools. Photoshop itself does, but Elements is a bit different — hence the huge difference in price.

There might be work-arounds perhaps. Look into “brushes for Photoshop Elements” and see if you can download the brush-types your looking for instead of trying to create them with the brush palette.

In the about.com article, they even link you to a list to finding free and commercial “add-ons” like brushes, layer styles, and other stuff. Also, try doing a search for “add-ons for Photoshop Elements”, so you can broaden your search to include more than just brushes (if interested).

I downloaded about 20 sets of brushes for Photoshop Elements; I have to load each one invididually so I just see that set at a time. Is there a way for me to see all sets at once?
That one didn’t work.
Hah, I just figured it out; I used the Preset Manager. Now I’m a bit laggy but it’s all good. xD

I need help with placing downloaded brushes into photoshop elements 6.0 so that they stay in on the program. I’ve tried using the “Load’ button to do it and it worked- BUT I want to have all the brushes I downloaded shown at the same time and stay on the program even after I exit and reopen it, I dont want it to be temporary. I’ve tried alot of things but I can’t figure out a way to do this. Please help and Thankyou in advance!

if youve got it on your brushes already just go back to the same menu to load and press save brushes.

Unless you’re drawing a little Mongolian Pony with a fluffy winter coat, horses are pretty smooth looking. For tail and mane you’re going to have to use the Paintbrush Tool with a fine, hard tip and do a lot of strokes. My experience doing people hair is to put down a layer of the lightest color first (if you’re drawing then this would be light gray), then use a slightly darker shade, then darker and darker. It helps to put each shade on its own layer so you can edit each shade separately – erase wild hairs, add more hairs, etc. Hair is difficult but it’s kind of fun to practice drawing it… especially on the computer where it’s soooo easy to undo or to toss the file or the layer and start again.

Adobe Photoshop Elements is a very watered-down version of Adobe Photoshop CS4. The functionality isn’t all there.
