I don’t know if it varies by camera or camera settings, but what is a typical amount of memory it requires on the disk?

The capture app doesn’t determine the space used – it’s down to the video format. MiniDV uses 13 GByte / hour, more for HD and less for highly compressed SD formats. The amount of compression is variable, so there’s no definitive answer.
