Q&A: Photoshop help: Heal brush doesn’t work!?
Question by Mike: Photoshop help: Heal brush doesn’t work!?
I have two layers. My top layer is my image through a filter (some art effect). The bottom layer is my main layer. I want to remove a spot but every time I use the heal brush tool it doesn’t take effect. I’m clearly doing something wrong. Do I create a new layer for the brush tool? The brush tool works when I flatten the image, but I want to keep the layers.

Riddles
It does sound as though you are not on the right layer.
This article has a graphic showing the dialog box and an active layer, to change active layers click on the layer name and it should change color, indicating it is the active one.

You can’t heal something from the adjustment layer. You’ll either need to flatten the image or temporarily turn off the adjustment layer(click the eye in the layers palette) and work directly on the image. If the image itself is “background” and locked, you’ll need to either make a copy of it or double click it and convert it to a layer.
I think you may be working on the wrong layer.
